Games industry unites to offer thousands of free games to NHS workers

Ukie has teamed up with influencer marketing solution, Keymailer, and developers and publishers from around the world to offer free games to NHS workers.

The Games For Carers initiative allows NHS workers access to a game or game subscription as a thank you for all the work they are doing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hope is that the games can provide some much needed escapism and stress relief for workers and their families. Amongst the many developers and publishers on board with the initiative are Bethesda, Sega, Curve Digital, Jagex, Konami, THQ Nordic and Xbox Game Studios. 

Dr Jo Twist, Ukie CEO and Safe In Our World Patron, said of the initiative:

“The UK games industry has been proud to play its part in conveying these vital public health messages during this national emergency. Now our community has united again to say thank you to the truly extraordinary people who make up the NHS frontline team. Games companies of all sizes and players everywhere recognise their exceptional dedication and hope this initiative goes some way to help them understand how respected and valued they are.”

Table Manners first game to feature SIOW branding and promotes blood donation

Games publisher Curve Digital and developer Echo Chamber Games are teaming up with the NHS Blood Transfusion Group to promote blood donation to video gamers across the country. As partners with Safe In Our World, Curve Digital have featured the SIOW logo in their Valentine’s Day release, Table Manners. A physics-based dating game in which players must try to have a successful date with AI partners, the title is one of the first to feature the Safe In Our World branding.

The aim of the NHS partnership, called “What’s Your Type?”, is to encourage those with certain blood types to come forward and donate blood to victims of burns, car crashes and to treat those with cancer. The most sought after donors are Males with O Negative, B Negative and A Negative blood types, but the NHS have also confirmed that any type of blood donation is encouraged. 

Nadine Eaton, Head of Blood Donor Recruitment for NHS Blood and Transplant, said of the initiative:

 “All our donors are amazing. But we need more than 68,000 men to start donating blood this year. This is not about recruiting as many donors as possible – it’s about getting the right gender mix. We’re thrilled that Table Manners’ tongue-in-cheek gameplay will reach new audiences and inspire them to save lives.”

Simon Byron, Publishing Director at Curve Digital, said:

When we learned that NHS Blood and Transplant were looking to inform new audiences about the need for more blood donors, we jumped at the chance to help them. Table Manners, like every other game out there, has the power to reach and engage in a way other mediums cannot. If our partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant inspires a few people to register, then we’d be very, very happy indeed.”
